Reorganization Plan Reaps Immediate Dividends

When InFront last caught up with Valerie Clark, the world was a much different place. It was 2007 and the economy was booming in Reno, Nev. So was business at Clark and Associates, the agency she joined nearly 20 years ago. Today, Nevada has the nation’s highest unemployment and foreclosure rates, and a number of clients are no longer around.

So how can Clark be talking about growth? She now has the right structure in place.

From Pain Comes Gain

Last fall, Clark brought in a consultant to help her revitalize the agency and put it on a strategic course. She admits the recent reorganization and refocus on sales was born out of necessity, perhaps even survival.

“Before the economy got bad, we were fortunate to have a couple big blocks of business, so as painful as it was to lose some clients, it didn’t kill our business. Still, I was scared,” she said. “It made us realize the importance of selling again.”

Beyond the business Clark brought in herself, she said there hadn’t been much production from others in the agency before or after the recession hit: “I don’t think we were complacent; we just seemed to be focused more on serving the clients we had than bringing in new business. I didn’t have the right environment for other producers to sell in.”

The consultant helped her to dig deep and determine where she wanted the agency to be in five years, and develop a plan to get there.
